LaCie 2big USB 3.0 DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON RAID
User Manual page 15
3.1.2. JBOD (Just a bunch of disks)
When the 2big USB 3.0 is set to JBOD, each drive is considered
a separate device, similar to individual hard disk drives. Each disk
will mount on your computer as separate hard drives, divided into
the partitions created by your operating system’s disk manage-
ment utility. One great advantage of JBOD is the use of the full
capacity of both drives. Also, in the event of a single drive failure,
files stored on the healthy drive are not lost. However, this con-
figuration offers none of the benefits of RAID 0 (speed) or RAID 1
(complete data protection).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Removing a drive in JBOD mode requires
that the user stop accessing data from the 2big USB 3.0. Make
certain that all transfers on both drives are finished before remov-
ing either disk.
Removing or adding a drive in JBOD Mode
Power Off
Insert or remove one or both disks as listed in 3.3. Removing and
Installing Drives.
Power On
The icon(s) for a disk that was removed might remain visible in My
Computer/Computer (Windows) or the desktop (Mac). While the
icon may remain, data will no longer be accessible since the disk
has been removed.
To avoid leaving a trace icon when using a JBOD configuration,
LaCie recommends unmounting and/or shutting down the 2big
USB 3.0 before removing a drive. See sections 2.3. Disconnect-
ing Your Hard Drive and 3.3. Removing and Installing Drives for
more information.

Applications
JBOD can be used with any application. In the event of
a single drive failure, files on the healthy drive will not be
lost. However, choosing to forgo RAID 0 and RAID 1 does
have its drawbacks since superior performance or total data
security will not be available.
